(o) To mark dowel positions, dots of thick paint are applied to one break face, and then the two pieces are quickly pressed together to transfer some of the paint onto the second face.
(o) Holes are then drilled perpendicular to the broken surface. The dowels are cut to length, and everything is dry assembled to check fit.
(o) If necessary the holes are adjusted, or timber wedges are added to support the pieces until the alignment is perfect.
(o) The holes in both sections are then filled with adhesive or grout, the dowel is fitted into one section, and the break surfaces covered with mortar.
(o) The joint is then immediately assembled and any overspill of mortar cleaned away.
